They passed over the Bridge of Stonebows, that had been built in the days of the power of the North Kingdom, and they took ail the land beyond to dwell in, between the river and the Far Downs. All that was demanded of them was that they should keep the Great Bridge in repair, and all other bridges and roads, speed the king's messengers, and acknowledge his lordship.

Introduction

This article will take you through the steps to build a simple stone bridge that you can be used to cross your rivers. There will also be information on how to make larger bridges using the techniques that have been outlined.

Research

I live not far from many stone bridges so am able to take a short drive to see some, if you are not so fortunate a quick image search can bring up many examples.

Small Bridges

Cut two bridge like shapes that are the same shape and size out of foamcore.

The size of these needs to be able to span your River Sections.

Using a ball point pen, score a pattern into the two wall section pieces.

The floor of the bridge is made from some thick card that is bend into shape. A tip here is to score horizontally across the underside to help with the bending. The road here is 3" wide.

This is then glued into place on the bridge walls. It may need to be held into place for a while whilst the glue dries.

Cut small pieces of thin card to be used as flagging stone for the top of the walls.

Painting

Paint the floor with textured paint and then once this has dried undercoat in black.

Drybrush the walls with Steel Legion Drab and then Karak Stone

Large Bridges

I decided to make a larger bridge for games based upon the one seen in the Shire from the movies:

This was done using much the same techniques as above but instead of scoring a brick pattern in, I covered it in textured plasticard that was cut to size. Also due to the larger size I also created an underneath for the arches in the same manner as the floor was made.
