Then Aragorn led the way, and such was the strength of his will in that hour that all the Dúnedain and their horses followed him. And indeed the love that the horses of the Rangers bore for their riders was so great that they were willing to face even the terror of the Door, if their masters' hearts were steady as they walked beside them.

Introduction

The Dúnedain were a race of Men descended from the Númenóreans who survived the sinking of their island kingdom and came to Eriador in Middle-earth, led by Elendil and his sons, Isildur and Anárion. They are also called the Men of the West and the Men of Westernesse (direct translations of the Sindarin term). They settled mainly in Arnor and Gondor.

The Westron name for Dúnadan was simply Adûn, "westerner", but this name was seldom used. This name was reserved to those Númenóreans who were friendly to the Elves: the other, hostile survivors of the Downfall were known as the Black Númenóreans.

The Dúnedain were descended from the Elf-friends, the few Men of the First Age who sided with the Noldorin Elves in Beleriand. Their original leader was Bëor the Old, a "Vassal" of the Elf lord Finrod. His people settled in Eldar lands, and he was an ancestor of the Lord Elros, a half-Elf. In the Second age, the Valar gave them Númenor, an island-continent to live on. They later created fortress-cities along the western coasts of Middle-earth, which dominated the lesser men of these areas. In time, Númenor was drowned and a small number of the Faithful (led by Elendil) escaped the destruction.

Sauron's spirit fled from Númenor to Middle-earth, and he again raised mighty armies to challenge the new Dúnedain kingdoms, Gondor and Arnor. With the aid of Gil-galad and the Elves, Sauron was defeated, and he vanished into the wild East for many centuries. Gondor and Arnor prospered during this time.

As Sauron began to re-form and gather strength, a series of deadly plagues came from the East. These tended to strike harder in the North than the South, and caused a population decline in Arnor. The chief of the Nine Ringwraiths, known commonly as the Witch-king of Angmar, began assaulting the divided Northern Dúnedain kingdoms from a mountain stronghold (Carn Dûm). Eventually, he succeeded in destroying Arthedain, the last of the Northern kingdoms.

After the fall of Arthedain, a remnant of the northern Dúnedain became the Rangers of the North, doing what they could to keep the peace in the near-empty lands of their Fathers. The surviving Dúnedain population of Arnor retreated to the Angle south of Rivendell, while smaller populations made isolated settlements in far western Eriador.

Over the centuries, the southern Dúnedain of Gondor intermarried more and more with so-called Middle Men. Only in regions such as Dol Amroth did their bloodline remain pure. Their lifespan became shorter with each generation. Eventually, even the Kings of Gondor married non-Dúnedain women occasionally.

Skin and Hair Areas

The model was undercoated in black as usual I always paint my models faces and skin areas first, this was done by painting the skin areas Ratskin Flesh and then washed using Reikland Fleshshade. Once dry this was then high lighted again with Ratskin Flesh and then Kislev Flesh.

I painted the hair areas on each model either dark brown or black. For dark brown I used Rhinox Hide and then highlighted in Mournfang Brown. For black hair I painted the areas Abaddon Black and then added soft highlights of Dawnstone for the older looking models as patches of grey hair.

Clothes

The trouser areas where painted in Abaddon Black and then highlighted with a 60/40 mix of Dawnstone and Abaddon Black.

The tunics where painted either a green, brown, or grey/blue colour. For the green it was basedcoated with Castellan Green and then highlighted with Elysian Green. For the brown tunics I based coated in Rhinox Hide and then highlighted in Mournfang Brown. Finally a wash of Brown Ink was applied over the area. For the grey/blue tunics a basecoat of The Fang was applied followed by a highlight of Dawnstone.

The boots where painted in the same manner as the brown tunics above.

The bracers where basecoated in Doombull Brown then washed in Brown Ink.

The cloaks and coats where painted either green or brown. If the tunic was painted brown the cloak would be green and visa versa.

Weapons

All wooden parts of weapons where basedcoated Rhinox Hide and then highlighted in Doombull Brown. Finally a wash of Brown Ink was applied over the area.

Any metal work was basecoated in leadbelcher then highlighted in Ironbreaker and finally with Runefang Steel

The quivers where painted Abaddon Black and then highlighted with a 60/40 mix of Dawnstone and Abaddon Black. The arrows in the quiver were painted Ushabti Bone the washed with Brown Ink.

Any belts were painted Rhinox Hide then highlighted with Balor Brown.

Weathering

The Dúnedain live a hard life in the wild and as such I imagined their clothes would not be pristine. To achieve a worn weathered look I lightly drybrushed Graveyard Earth and then Karak Stone over the entire model.

At the bottom of the cloak/coats I added patches of Graveyard Earth, then moving towards the end mournfang Brown and then Rhinox Hide to represent the cloak being dragged in muddy puddles and the like.
