Suddenly Frodo saw before him a black chasm. At the end of the hall the floor vanished and fell to an unknown depth. The outer door could only be reached by a slender bridge of stone, without kerb or rail, that spanned the chasm with one curving spring of fifty feet. It was an ancient defence of the Dwarves against any enemy that might capture the First Hall and the outer passages. They could only pass across it in single file. At the brink Gandalf halted and the others came up in a pack behind.

Introduction

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm is a narrow stone bridge crossing a chasm within the eastern gates of Moria. Durin's Causeway are the large stone steps that lead to the Bridge from the Chamber of Mazarbul.

The bridge was built to guard the East Gate of Khazad-dûm. It narrowly spanned a deep chasm built under the high arches common in Khazad-dûm. This gave the bridge powerful defensive value, for if an enemy were to breach the East Gate of Khazad-dûm, he would be forced to cross the span of the Bridge (some fifty feet) in single file line, exposing the crossing enemy to the arrows of the Dwarven defenders.

The Causeway Steps

First download and print out the templates used to build the steps:

Part A Upper
Part A and B Lower
Part B Upper and Part C
Part D Upper
Part D Lower
Part E
Part F and G

The upper and lower parts will need to be taped together along the grey dotted line.

Using the templates to draw around cut out all the step pieces. Note parts A and B use the same basic lower section, but only part B has the damage section.

Glue part B to part A so that they line up and glue part C to the top of Part A.

Glue the right hand section of part D to the end of part E.

Glue parts F and G toghether.

One thing to not is that because of the need to make storage easier I am not gluing parts A and B to D or part E to parts F and G. If you have more storage space than me, feel free to glue these parts together. The end result will look better but take up more room.

Detailing

Cover all the wall areas in decorators caulk, this is basically a ready mixed filler. Make sure the covering is relatively even and smooth. Using a pointed tool (I used an old barbeque skewer), draw in a brick pattern on to your walls. Around the arches make an edging section.

Use stripes of mod rock to cover all the remaining exposed parts of the Polystyrene.

The Bridge

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm is simply made from a shaped piece of Extruded Polystyrene that is roughly 11" long, 1 1/2" wide and 2 1/4" high. Small bits of damage can be added to the bridge to age it.

It is then covered in Mod Rock, and that is all there is too it.

The board will make use of the ground sections that were built in the The Gates of Moria article. These will be positioned opposite each other to form a chasm that the bridge will span.

Painting

All the pieces were undercoated in black.

It was then drybrushed a dark grey (a 50/50 mix of black and Dawnstone), followed by a lighter grey (Dawnstone).
